Gundersen Health System is seeking a highly motivated Environmental Compliance Technician to join our team! In this role, you will play a vital part in ensuring that safe, efficient, and compliant management of medical waste and other hospital waste streams.

What Will You Do:

  • day to day you will safely handle hazardous, bio-hazardous, pharmaceutical, laboratory, radiation oncology, and chemical waste

  • Travel frequently to various locations in company owned fleet vehicles

  • sort, package, and prepare hazardous waste for transport

  • collaborate with safety and infection control to ensure safe handling

What's Available:

  • Full time, 80 hours biweekly (1.0 FTE)

  • Schedule primarily Monday- Friday 8-4:30pm

  • Location: Based at our Main Campus in La Crosse, WI. The role will frequently travel in company owned fleet vehicles

  • Starting pay of $47,500/year and up based on your relevant experience

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety or Environmental Science or Biology or Chemistry or a related field.

  • 1-2 years of applicable experience with environmental permit reporting, safety, regulatory documentation and inspections, and safe handling of chemicals and hazardous waste.

  • Strong communication skills

Job Description:

The Environmental Compliance Technician supports Gundersen's Comprehensive Waste Program and the Environmental Compliance Department under the direction of the Environmental Compliance Manager. The Environmental Compliance Technician performs work in fields related to industrial health and hygiene, waste management, safety, environmental reporting, compliance, community support, and sustainability.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Supports the Environmental Compliance Manager by ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations and permits.

2. Trains staff and fields questions as it pertains to Gundersen's comprehensive waste program.

3. Performs internal and external site inspections and audits to ensure regulatory compliance and maintains all pertinent documentation.

4. Travel to and from regional and affiliate sites.

5. Sort, package, and prepare hazardous waste for transport.

6. Safely handle hazardous waste, bio-hazardous "red" bag waste, pharmaceutical waste, laboratory waste, radiation oncology waste, oil and chemical waste, batteries, lighting/lamps, maintenance/facility waste and all other identified waste streams.

7. Collaborate with safety and infection control to ensure safe management and handling of hazardous materials and chemicals.

8. Assists with Gundersen's sustainability program.

9. Assists with Gundersen's Missions Donation program.

10. Responsible for driving, which includes driving and operating large commercial trucks and/or vehicles regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Employee is responsible for performing appropriate safety inspections, assisting with maintaining vehicles in good repair, and completing applicable driving and maintenance logs. The employee will follow all applicable laws, regulations, and policies related to driving assigned vehicle and promptly report to leadership or appropriate personnel, any vehicle concerns, traffic violations, citations, or accidents.

11. Performs other job-related responsibilities as requested.

Education and Learning:

REQUIRED

Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety or Environmental Science or Biology or Chemistry or a related field

Work Experience:

REQUIRED

1-2 years of applicable experience with environmental permit reporting, safety, regulatory documentation and inspections, and safe handling of chemicals and hazardous waste.

License and Certifications:

REQUIRED

Valid Driver's License (DL)

Federal Medical Card

In-House Driver's Road Test Certificate within 60 days of hire

DESIRED

40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification, DOT HAZMAT transportation certification, RCRA/EPA hazardous waste management certification, Wisconsin UST class A/B operator certification, Commercial Driver's License (CDL), air permit training
